Cookie Policy

DPDP Act (India) GDPR (EU/UK) ePrivacy (EU) CCPA (California)

This Cookie Policy explains how OwnRanks uses cookies, localStorage, and similar technologies. It is designed to be transparent and help you make informed choices about your privacy. If you have any questions, contact us.

1. Introduction

This Cookie Policy explains how OwnRanks ("we", "our", "us") uses cookies, localStorage, and similar tracking technologies when you visit or use our platform at ownranks.com.

This policy is designed to be transparent about what data is stored on your device, why it is stored, and how you can control it. It works alongside our Privacy Policy, which provides more detail about how we process personal data.

By using OwnRanks, you consent to the use of cookies and local storage as described in this policy. If you do not agree, you may adjust your browser settings or refrain from using certain features of the platform.

This policy complies with:

  • Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act) of India
  • General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union
  • ePrivacy Directive (EU Cookie Law)
  • California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA)

2. What Are Cookies & Local Storage?

Cookies are small text files stored on your device by your web browser. They are widely used to make websites work efficiently and provide information to site owners.

However, OwnRanks primarily uses browser localStorage — a modern web storage API — rather than traditional HTTP cookies for its core functionality. Unlike cookies, localStorage data is not automatically sent to the server with every request, and it does not expire unless explicitly cleared.

We also interact with third-party services (such as Razorpay) that may set their own cookies on their domains when you interact with them.

The key difference:

  • localStorage — stays on your browser, cleared manually or by the application
  • Cookies — sent with HTTP requests, can be persistent or session-based
  • Third-party cookies — set by external services (e.g., payment gateways, CDNs)

3. Essential Local Storage (Strictly Necessary)

These items are essential for the platform to function. They cannot be disabled without breaking core features. No consent is required under GDPR/ePrivacy as they are strictly necessary.

LocalStorage keys used by OwnRanks:

• ownranks_token — stores your authentication JWT to keep you logged in across page refreshes. Without this, you would need to log in on every page visit. • ownranks_registration_id — temporarily stores your registration session ID during the email/OTP verification flow. Cleared automatically after successful registration. • next-themes — stores your dark/light mode preference so the theme persists across sessions. Set by the next-themes library.

None of these items track your activity across other websites. They are strictly limited to OwnRanks functionality.

If you disable localStorage entirely in your browser, OwnRanks will not function correctly — you will not be able to log in, register, or complete payments.

4. Third-Party Cookies

When you interact with third-party services integrated into OwnRanks, those services may set their own cookies on their domains. We do not control these cookies. Here is what we use:

Razorpay (payment processing) • Service: https://checkout.razorpay.com/v1/checkout.js • What it does: Processes subscription payments and one-time orders • Cookies set: Razorpay may set session cookies, fraud-detection cookies, and checkout-related cookies on checkout.razorpay.com and api.razorpay.com • Purpose: Essential for payment processing • More info: https://razorpay.com/privacy/

Google Fonts (typography) • Service: https://fonts.googleapis.com & fonts.gstatic.com • What it does: Loads the Inter typeface for consistent typography • Cookies set: Google Fonts may log IP addresses and set CDN performance cookies. Under GDPR, Google Fonts has been clarified as not requiring consent for standard usage, but IP addresses are logged. • More info: https://fonts.google.com/attribution

Google Maps (review redirect) • Service: Google Maps (when users click the "Review on Google" button) • What it does: Redirects customers to your Google Maps business page to leave a review • Cookies set: Google Maps may set cookies when you interact with Google Maps links • More info: https://policies.google.com/privacy

We do not use any advertising cookies, tracking cookies, social media pixels (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.), or analytics cookies.

5. Passive Data Collection (No Storage)

We automatically collect certain technical information when you visit OwnRanks. This data is used on our server for legitimate operational purposes and is not stored in cookies or localStorage on your device:

• IP address — detected using geoip-lite on our backend to determine your country for regional pricing. We do not log or store IP addresses beyond what is necessary for this real-time lookup. • Browser timezone — read via Intl.DateTimeFormat on the client to provide a country hint (not stored, used ephemerally) • Browser language — read via navigator.language to provide a secondary country hint (not stored, used ephemerally) • User-agent string — transmitted in HTTP headers and used for basic device/browser detection in our server logs

This data is processed on the basis of legitimate interest — it is necessary to provide correct pricing and ensure platform security.

6. Your Choices & How to Control Storage

You have full control over cookies and localStorage in your browser. Here is how to manage them:

For localStorage (all browsers):

  • Open your browser's Developer Tools (F12)
  • Go to Application > Local Storage
  • Right-click on https://ownranks.com and select "Clear"
  • This will remove all OwnRanks data. You will be logged out and theme preference reset.

For cookies (blocking third-party cookies):

  • Chrome: Settings > Privacy and Security > Cookies and other site data > Block third-party cookies
  • Firefox: Settings > Privacy & Security > Enhanced Tracking Protection > Strict
  • Safari: Preferences > Privacy > Prevent cross-site tracking
  • Edge: Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Manage and delete cookies

To disable all client-side storage:

  • You can disable JavaScript entirely, but this will break the platform
  • You can use Private/Incognito mode — data is cleared when the window is closed

Important: Blocking essential localStorage items will prevent OwnRanks from functioning. You will not be able to log in, register, or complete purchases.

7. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or third-party services.

If we make material changes, we will notify business owners via email and update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.

We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Your continued use of OwnRanks after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
